Have you ever had to break up with a friend? Here are some tips if you decide it’s just time to move on.

You have just grown apart or maybe you realize that you can’t be friends with her/him anymore. But how do you break up with a friend? Here are some tips from Cosmopolitan magazine.

First, Think It Over

The best way to break up with a friend is dictated by the reason why you are breaking up. Maybe you don’t have anything in common anymore—or maybe you’ve grown apart. Your gut is likely right about your feelings, but knowing why you want her out of your life will help you decide how to end things.

Take It Slow

Consider taking a break first, or downgrading to a less intimate friendship if you find you’re growing apart or just don’t have anything in common.

Don’t Just Cut Her Off

It’s tempting to just ignore her instead of dealing with an in-person breakup, but it’s better for you—and her—if you talk to her about it.

Yeah, She Might Spazz

Breakups are never fun—and being the losing end of a breakup can bring up feelings of anger and emotion. You should be prepared to deal if that happens—and don’t get defensive.

Take Time to Get Over It

You ended the friendship, so why are you feeling bummed about it? It’s natural to feel sad about the end of a relationship, no matter if it was positive or not. Don’t be afraid to cry about it—and then move on.

Play Nice When You See Her Around

You won’t always be able to avoid the ex-friend—especially if she’s part of your social circle. If you bump into her at a party, just say hi and move on. No drama necessary.
